DOHA: Shehrazade Ballet to be performed by Sofia National Ballet troupe, opens tomorrow at the Katara Drama Theatre at the Katara Cultural Village.
Shehrazade is a symphonic suite composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1888.
Based on One Thousand and One Nights, often known as The Arabian Nights, this orchestral work combines two features typical of Russian music and of Rimsky-Korsakov in particular with dazzling, colourful orchestration and an interest in the East, which figured greatly in the history of Imperial Russia, as well as orientalism in general.
This is the first time Shehrazade Ballet will be stage in the Middle East, according to Katara.
The ballet opens at 8.30 pm Wednesday at Building 16 in Katara. The ballet will run up to October 25.
Formed in 1928 and steeped in the Russian classical tradition for over 80 years, Sofia National Ballet has become a national cultural institution in Bulgaria. (QNA)
