Doha: International Bank of Qatar (ibq) sponsored the Pink Ribbon Zumbathon held at Ritz-Carlton Doha as part of the breast cancer awareness campaign on Sunday to mark International Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with proceeds going to Qatar Cancer Society (QCS).
“We are delighted to support QCS to raise breast cancer prevention awareness through this event. We would like everyone to join in to support this worthy cause for a fit and healthy society,” said Jabra Ghandour, Managing Director, ibq.
“Our contribution to cancer awareness events are part of our corporate social responsibility strategy that supports cultural, healthcare, educational, sports and charity events, underlining the bank’s commitment towards the community in Qatar,” Ghandour said.
Hoss Vetry, Cluster General Manager, Ritz-Carlton Hotels, Qatar, said: “Taking part in the campaign, the hotel chose a ‘movement’ theme because keeping fit through dance moves is now a more acceptable form of exercise for women compared to traditional strenuous gym workouts.
“New techniques have been incorporated in the exercise that integrate fitness moves like Zumba, which is practised by over 14 million people in 150 countries.
“Zumba has seen a huge take up in the Arab world where it has become popular, mainly due to the effective way it can help burn calories and provides an enjoyable way to do exercise.”
Mariam Hamad Al Nuaimi, Director-General, QCS, said, “Statistics show that the incidence of cancer is on the rise in Qatar and the Middle East, which shows the importance of launching an awareness programme on a large scale, focusing on treatment and prevention such as through healthy lifestyles and exercise.
““The publicity QCS has received underlines how the support we have had from institutions is a successful way to reach people to make them more aware of cancer and its prevention by adopting healthy eating habits and practising sports,” added Al Nuaimi.
