Qatar wins UN Human Rights Council membership

New York: Qatar yesterday won the membership of the Human Rights Council for a three-year period from 2015-2017.
Qatar won the vote in the UN General Assembly in New York backed by 142 countries as part of the Group of Asian states. India, Indonesia and Bangladesh also won the membership of the Human Rights Council.
This is the third time that Qatar has been elected for membership of the Council which is the highest organ of the UN on human rights worldwide.
Qatar won the membership with the support of such a large number of member-states of the UN to reflect the international status it enjoys and the role it plays in the defence of human rights in all regions of the world. QNA
