Nairobi: At least 17 people have been killed in western Kenya after a petrol tanker collided with a stationary minibus.

St John Ambulance service spokesman said in a statement on Saturday that the petrol tanker hit a minibus on the side of the road while passengers were landing in the town of Webeye, killing 17 people on the spot, while a number of others were injured and taken to hospitals for treatment.

Local authorities said they had opened an investigation to find out the circumstances of the accident, noting that the injury of some passengers is serious.

Fifty-eight people were killed in October when a bus rolled down a steep hill and overturned in Kericho County, about 200 kilometers north of the capital, Nairobi. According to the National Transport and Safety Authority, 2945 people have been killed on Kenya's roads this year. (QNA)
