DOHA: The Supreme Education Council (SEC) yesterday announced the launch of ‘Qatar-e-Nature’ contest to raise environment awareness among schoolchildren.
The contest based on ‘Qatar e-Nature’ mobile application, now in its second year, is held in collaboration with Sasol, an international integrated energy and chemical company, and Friends of the Environment Centre (FEC).
This year new questions are added about the content of the app, which has been updated to include mammals and reptiles in addition to the existing plants, birds, and insects.
The SEC will promote the use of the app in schools and encourage students’ participation in the contest. The SEC has supported the app due to its value in educating children on nature in Qatar.
The contest is open to all students until May 5. The questions can be accessed via the app on a smartphone or tablet or web browser at contest.enature.qa.
Participants can find the correct answers to the questions on mammals, reptiles, birds, plants and insects by browsing through the app content. Students can also enter a photo of nature in Qatar for the chance to win.
Prizes will be awarded in a ceremony at the end of May to winners in each grade and the top five schools with highest participation. The grand prize will be a trip to South Africa and other prizes include latest iPads and iPhones.
Rima Abu Khadija, Director, Office of Curricula Standards, Education Institute, said: “It is useful to engage all groups of society and this is what encouraged us to support the use of the app in all schools through yearly contests that will enrich students’ knowledge of the environment around them and improve their academic achievements.”
She thanked Sasol and FEC for their efforts to develop the app, which sheds light on Qatar’s diverse nature and promotes understanding of the environment and the need to protect it. The user-friendly app is available free for download on Apple App Store, Google Play Store for Android, Windows Phone Store, and BlackBerry App World. A web version of the app (www.enature.qa) is available for desktop access. Latest developments and more information can be found on Qatar e-Nature pages on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
