DOHA: Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) has helped 35,340 displaced Iraqis and Syrian refugees in Iraqi Kurdistan in the past few months through its food and winter assistance.
Under the 2014-2015 Warm Winter Campaign in Iraqi Kurdistan, which targets Iraqi families that left their homes and cities to seek a safer place in the city of Shaqlawa, QRC distributed winter assistance worth QR797,398 to 25,440 people, including widows, the elderly, children and people with disabilities. Each family received a heater and three blankets.
In the face of increased instability in Mosul and deterioration in basic life services, the QRC office approached working partners, collected data on the situation, and identified the most-affected areas.
In partnership with Social Solidarity Charitable Society, food packages worth QR265,583 were distributed to 9,900 people.
Each package contained 25kg of food items, including rice, macaroni, lentils, white beans, vegetable oil, tomato paste, canned meat and fish, dates, sugar, tea, jam as well as soap packs.
A QRC delegation visited Bureau of Non-governmental Organisations of the Kurdistan Government to further enhance relations, submit a detailed report on QRC projects to cover the needs of the Syrian refugees and displaced Iraqis since October 2013 and discuss humanitarian action in the region.
Akram Mohamed, Head of the bureau, thanked QRC for humanitarian services and assistance to the distressed families in Kurdistan territories.
He stressed that the bureau would keep removing obstacles and facilitating QRC’s task to make more achievements, particularly as the Syrian and Iraqi displacement crisis continues to have impact on the region and its ability to contain the situation.
These efforts are based on a fundraiser launched by QRC to mobilise QR7.3m to initiate an urgent intervention programme, including mobile healthcare, food security, water and sanitation services, hygiene kits, and household items for 30,000 Iraqis over six months. the peninsula
