Members of the Italian Parliament have lauded the relationship between Qatar and Italy while stressing that both countries still have many sectors to explore together.
The delegation also praised Qatar’s commitment to labour reforms, even citing the significance of the minimum wage policy in Qatar, which Italy itself is still debating to introduce.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday in Doha, Senator Sergio Romagnoli, Chairman of the Working Committee and head of the delegation, said the visit has enabled them ‘know more’ about Qatar and will promote the friendship between both countries.
“This visit is significant to our countries, and it is an honour to be here as the head of the delegation. This visit has helped us as a parliament to know Qatar. This visit has been great, and I have felt comfortable. I have seen a beautiful country with a passion for development. We have met the Minister of Labour, H E Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri; Qatar National Human Rights Commission Chairperson, H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah; Assistant Foreign Minister, Lolwah Al Khater, and officials of the Supreme Committee,” he said.
“There’s a possibility for synergy between both countries and the whole world. We have seen the work being done here is great. We commend the introduction of the minimum wage structure to Qatar, a system that we don’t have in Italy but is being discussed. There’s no doubt both countries can work together to make things better for workers,” he added.
Romagnoli also added that the delegation visited some of the infrastructures for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the workers’ accommodation and the temporary shelters for Afghan evacuees.
Also, Senator Gianluca Ferrera said he discussed the Russia-Ukraine crisis with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and condemned Israeli aggression in Palestine. He said the world must continue to denounce actions against sovereign states and innocent citizens and thanked Qatar for its efforts towards calming volatile situations and providing humanitarian support.
Senator Sergio Vaccaro, Chairman of the Tourism Committee, said, “I believe we are at the beginning of our collaboration. We have addressed so many themes, and we have visited places. I want to thank Qatar for its openness, transparency and willingness to dialogue. We have seen that Qatar is a pioneer in workers welfare, especially laws that have been made in the parliament.”
