Doha, Qatar: Al Rayyan coach Vicente Moreno expects a tough challenge from Saudi Arabia’s Al Shabab in the Gulf Club Champions League (GCCL) final today as his side targets a second trophy in as many weeks.
The Lions, who lifted the QSL Cup last week, have produced an impressive campaign in the competition, topping their group before defeating Kuwait’s Al Qadsia SC 2-0 in the semi-final.
However, Moreno cautioned his players against Al Shabab, describing the Saudi side as strong and well-balanced opponents.
“We must be cautious against a strong and distinguished team that includes top-quality players,” said the Al Rayyan coach on the eve of the final, which kicks off at 6:45pm at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium.
“The final will be different and requires the highest level of concentration. It will be a tough match because both sides will do their best to lift the trophy.”
He added that Al Rayyan’s preparations have gone well, with the focus firmly on delivering the required level to secure the title.
“We will enter the final with high morale, especially since the match is being held at our home ground. The team’s preparations for the final were good, and the focus is currently on delivering the expected level in order to win and be crowned with the Gulf title,” he said.
Midfielder Julien De Sart also expressed confidence in the team’s readiness for the final showdown.
“We are aiming to deliver a performance that will help us win the championship title. We invite Al Rayyan fans, as their support will motivate the players to perform at their best level,” he said.
Al Shabab reached the final after a dramatic semi-final against Iraq’s Zakho SC, winning 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regular and extra time.
Coach Noureddine Zekri expressed strong belief in his team’s ability to deliver another decisive performance.
“I am confident in the team’s ability to deliver a great performance in the final and win the Gulf title. Al Shabab have a great history and a historic opportunity to return to the podium after 12 years,” he said.
He further acknowledged the strength of their opponents, praising Al Rayyan’s performances throughout the competition.
“It is going to be a challenging match because Al Rayyan have shown outstanding levels in the tournament and will be playing at home in front of their fans,” he added.
Al Shabab striker Abderrazak Hamdallah also underlined the team’s determination ahead of the final.
“We will enter the match with great enthusiasm and aim to please the fans by winning the title,” said the Al Shabab player.
