Tanzania poll violence claimed 518 lives: government enquiry

Dar es Salaam: Violence around Tanzania's election in October last year left 518 dead, a commission of enquiry organised by the government said Thursday, giving a figure far below opposition estimates.

"The total number of deaths resulting from the general elections was 518, of whom 490 were male," said Mohamed Chande Othman, head of the commission set up by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
