Doha:  Two-time world champion Efren Reyes of the Philippines kept his  qualification hopes for the round of 64 at the 2014 World 9-ball Championship (W9BC)  alive by winning his second match here yesterday.
The Filipino veteran, who lost on the first day of the $200,000 championship sanctioned by the World Pool-Billiard Association, defeated Denis Grabe of Estonia 9-8 in a closely fought match.
Another former champion Daryl peach of England also won  defeating Vilmos Foldes of Hungary by an identical score.
This is the fifth straight year that the Qatar is hosting the W9BC.  The players are competing in 16 groups of eight playing a race-to-9, alternate break, double elimination format.
Four players from each group will make up the final 64, which marks the start of the always tense and dramatic single elimination phase of the tournament.
Matches will then become race to 11, alternate break. The final, which takes place on June 27, will be a race to 13.  The winner will receive $30,000. The runner-up will receive $15,000. The total prize is $200,000.  The players are competing on Wiraka New Model Tables with Simonis 860 Cloth, Electric Blue Color and using Aramith Super Pro TV Balls. The Qatar Billiard and Snooker Federation, which is hosting and organising the W9BC, is providing free live streaming of the entire tournament on its website, http://live.qbsf.qa/. THE PENINSULA
