DOHA: During the summer, ExxonMobil Qatar welcomed students from various universities in the country as part of its university internship programme. The programme was an extensive work experience for the interns in which each student was assigned a department that complemented the youth’s educational discipline, such as engineering, business and finance.

The interns were given real tasks and projects to which they applied their educational knowledge in relevant work areas. In addition, the programme provided the students an opportunity to experience a professional work environment, discover the energy industry and get a better understanding of ExxonMobil’s business strategies and commitment to society.

“At ExxonMobil, we believe that knowledge cannot remain abstract — it must be put into practice to have a constructive effect,” said Abdullatif Al Naemi, Manager of National Development at ExxonMobil Qatar.

“Therefore, we employ interns every summer and ensure they get the most benefit out of the programme. The internship programme is also part of our commitment to be an effective part of the Qatari community.”

Al Reem Al Khulaifi, an intern in the Public and Government Affairs department at ExxonMobil Qatar commented that the opportunity was very motivating. “It made me much more confident about my educational path, and gave me the chance to explore my career interests before graduating from university,” she said. “With thanks to ExxonMobil, I am now sure that my studies suit the type of job I aim for in the future.”

An intern in the Controllers department, Noora Fakhroo commented that the various projects and tasks allowed her to apply her potential and knowledge in a working environment. “This experience gave me the opportunity to explore the world’s cultures and external working environments in a practical way, in addition to witnessing the importance of working in groups and how success can be easily achieved if people work together,” she said.

The interns attended several presentations given by subject matter experts from ExxonMobil including introductory classes in chemistry and geology. These presentations enhanced the students’ understanding of how the company works and how to apply various university disciplines in a working environment.

Also, students spent part of their internship exploring ExxonMobil Research Qatar located at Qatar Science and Technology Park in Education City. During their visit, students learned about the various programmes ExxonMobil is conducting in environmental management, LNG safety, water reuse and coastal geology.

In line with the company’s efforts to support the increased participation of Qatari nationals in the workforce, ExxonMobil Qatar also ran a simultaneous programme for high school students from American School of Doha and Qatar Academy. The programme aims to familiarize outstanding Qatari students with the energy sector at a critical time in their education in the hopes that these students will be more encouraged to explore potential career opportunities in areas such as science and engineering.

“We want Qatar’s youth to have a better understanding of how their country’s natural resources are developed given the importance this industry plays as we move toward the Qatar National Vision 2030,” said Al Naemi. The Peninsula
