JAKARTA: Police shot dead two terrorist suspects armed with a homemade bomb yesterday and arrested another two as the country continues to battle militant activity, officials said.
Counter-terrorism chief Ansyaad Mbai said the men were part of a violent Islamist group and were shot as the anti-terror police unit Detachment 88 conducted a raid on the street in an East Java town. Police seized a revolver and a bag containing a homemade bomb.
Work begins on tallest building
BEIJING: Work on the foundations of an 838-metre skyscraper in China which will be the world’s tallest building has started, its constructor said yesterday, adding the tower would be completed by April. A banner displayed at the site shows the top of the blocky tower 838 metres (2,749 feet) above the ground, a little above the current record-holder, the 830-metre Burj Khalifa in Dubai. It will take just 4 months once the foundations are laid and cost 9bn yuan ($1.5bn).
People flee as volcano erupts
JAKARTA: Indonesia’s most volatile volcano spewed smoke and ash yesterday, forcing hundreds of people to flee their villages along its slopes, a disaster official said. Mount Merapi on the main island of Java rumbled as heavy rain fell around its cloud-covered crater.
The sound was heard 30km away, but an eruption did not occur and the volcano’s alert level was not raised, Nugroho said.
