Beijing: TikTok, the social media platform owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, announced a restructuring of its content moderation operations in the United Kingdom, part of a broader global initiative to expand its reliance on artificial intelligence technologies.

TikTok noted that some moderation tasks will remain in the UK and emphasized that affected employees will be given priority for internal opportunities.

Content moderators are tasked with removing prohibited material, including hate speech, misinformation, and explicit content.

The move is part of a wider restructuring effort that also includes several Asian countries, such as Malaysia, and reflects a growing trend among tech companies to reduce dependence on human labor in favor of automated solutions.

According to TikTok, 85 percent of content removals for rule violations are now carried out automatically by its systems.

As of July 25, digital platforms in the UK are required to implement strict safeguards to protect minors from inappropriate content under the newly enacted Online Safety Act.

The law also mandates the removal of material promoting eating disorders, suicidal ideation, and self-harm.
