ISLAMABAD: The much-awaited and widely-discussed maiden meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Dr Manmohan Singh on the margins of the 68th UN General Assembly has been scheduled as both will be having a breakfast meeting in Manhattan hotel where Singh will host Sharif. They will have delegation-level talks and a one-on-one meeting.

The meeting between the prime ministers of Pakistan and India has attained conspicuous significance against the backdrop of tense ties between the two countries. It could break the impasse spreading over two years in the relations of the neighbouring countries. Nawaz Sharif is viewed as a champion of peace with India and he would put his best efforts to bring about normalcy between the two nuclear countries.

Nawaz Sharif will also have an important meeting with Iranian President Hasan Rouhani on the opening day of the UNGA on the same afternoon. It will be their maiden meeting.

Well-placed diplomatic sources said yesterday that Prime Minister Sharif will have several back-to-back meetings with world leaders attending the UNGA but his address before the General Assembly on Friday would be among the significant events of the world body gathering.

He will put across his vision pertaining to peace and tranquillity in the region, democracy and the elimination of terror from the face of earth. The prime minister will attend the inaugural session of the UNGA this morning which will also be addressed by the US President.
