Women’s Hospital holds workshop

DOHA: The role of healthcare professionals in encouraging new mothers to breastfeed their babies was discussed during a three-day workshop as part of Women’s Hospital’s preparation for accreditation as a child-friendly healthcare facility by World Health Organisation (WHO).
The workshop, ‘Developing Medical Skills in Breastfeeding’ was attended by physicians and nurses. Dr Amal Abu Baker, Head of the Breastfeeding Unit and Consultant at the Family and Maternity Section at the hospital, said the workshop focused on giving Women’s Hospital clinicians practical skills to promote breastfeeding in the hospital’s wards and clinics. “The breastfeeding awareness project focuses on issues, including educating new mothers on how to breastfeed; including starting as early as 30 minutes after giving birth, ensuring direct skin contact with their babies and the ideal breastfeeding positions,” Dr Abu Baker said.
