DOHA: Tuesday’s fire incident at City Center was caused by a cigarette not stuffed out properly, although smoking is banned in the shopping mall.
Initially it was said the fire was caused by a cable fault. However, Civil Defence investigations ascertained the correct cause, said City Center management in a statement yesterday.
“Early evidence suggested that the fire was caused by an electrical wiring fault. But a detailed investigation by Civil Defence has shown that the cause was a cigarette smoked by an employee of one of City Center’s tenants. The cigarette was not extinguished properly,” said the statement.
“City Center gives the highest priority to maintenance and safety and will continue to do so.”
The small fire broke out in ‘Fun City’, a play area for children near the food court on the third floor on Tuesday morning.
No casualties or damage were reported. Normalcy soon returned although there was an immediate evacuation.
