Cabinet hails Qatar’s competitiveness ranking

Doha: The Cabinet yesterday praised Qatar’s status in the fields of economic performance, government efficiency, business sector competency and infrastructure.
This came as the Cabinet reviewed a letter from the Finance Minister on Qatar’s ranking in the World Competitiveness Yearbook 2014. Qatar was ranked 19th among 60 mostly advanced countries.
The Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani chaired the meeting at the Emiri Diwan.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs H E Ahmed bin Abdullah by Zaid Al Mahmoud said the Cabinet also ratified amendments to some provisions of its decision No. 36 of 2011 on renewing fees and charges at sea ports and vessel registration fees. It  approved a draft memorandum of understanding on security cooperation between Qatar and the UK.
It examined the annual report of the Permanent Emergency Committee for April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014, which featured the panel’s activities, including coordination with member entities to provide them with equipment during emergencies, emergency plans, final drafts of the national emergency plan, activities of the national programme for disasters and its implementation, and procedures for building national capacities to respond to radiological and nuclear incidents, in coordination with International Atomic Energy Agency. The meeting also a memo from the Finance Minister on the outcome of a study on the effects of cooperating with and joining Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.
The Cabinet also reviewed a letter from the Minister of Justice on considering Qatar’s accession to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, which was adopted in 1948.
It discussed a letter from the Minister of Development Planning and Statistics, who is also Head of the Permanent Population Committee, on the outcome of the panel’s study on views and recommendations included in the Qatar Population Status Report 2013.
