DOHA: The Higher Organising Committee of the UN Climate Change Conference - COP18/CMP8 - met yesterday to review the final preparations for the event which begins on November 26.
The meeting was chaired by the Chairman of the Administrative Control and Transparency Authority H E Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah, the President-elect of COP18/CMP8 conference and chairman of the Higher Organising Committee.
Al Attiyah will take over the COP presidency – a year-long role - when the conference opens at the Qatar National Convention Center. The meeting yesterday reviewed the final preparations for the conference, including several green initiatives being implemented at COP18/CMP8 Doha.
The organisers have been striving to prepare Doha for the arrival of more than 17,000 participants, from 194 nations. As part of this, a team of volunteers has been placed around the city – in shopping malls and at hotels – to answer questions from the public about climate change and how they can help make a difference.
A fleet of buses has also been provided for those travelling to the conference, as a way to cut down on congestion and to reduce the environmental impact of the Sessions.
The meeting was also attended by the members of the Higher Organising Committee, including H E Abdulaziz bin Ahmed Al Malki, General Coordinator for COP18/CMP8 and Chairman of its Executive Organising Committee; H E Fahad bin Mohammad Al Attiya, Member of the Higher Organising Committee and Chairman of the Organising Sub-Committee, HE Dr Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada, the Minister of Energy and Industry, and member of the Higher Organising Committee; H E Dr Khalid bin Mohammad Al Attiyah, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and member of the Higher Organising Committee; H E Abdullah bin Mubarak Al Madadi, Minister of Environment and member of the Higher Organising Committee; and Khaled bin Fahad Al Khater, a member of the Organising Sub-Committee for COP18/CMP8 Doha.
Al Attiyah was also briefed on the work of the Security Committee by H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani, the Minister of State for Interior.
