DOHA: With the United Nations Climate Change Conference opening in Doha next Monday, COP18/CMP8 has turned to a paperless system to provide key information about the event in a sustainable way.

To keep the participants and residents informed of the many events and attractions on offer and to provide information about travel and accommodation, COP18/CMP8 is using its website, www.cop18.qa, and Twitter feeds, in English and Arabic, and smartphone apps.

H E Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah, the President-elect of COP18/CMP8, said: “Environmental sustainability is one of the four key pillars of our 2030 National Vision, and hosting COP18/CMP8 is an opportunity to invest directly in helping to move things forward.”

Keeping the environment in mind, the conference is attempting to cut down on its paper use. Much of the key information for participants will be accessible with the use of QR codes. These two-dimensional “Quick Response” barcodes can be scanned by smartphones to gain access to relevant documents, maps and websites in a quick, simple and paper-free way.

QR codes will be placed around the QNCC during the conference, and at the Doha Exhibition Centre (DEC), hotels, airport and the 32 transport hubs where participants can use shuttle buses to reach the venues.

At the Qatar Sustainability Expo, which runs alongside the conference in the DEC, exhibitors will be encouraged to display QR codes that link to PDF documents instead of handing out literature.

A Twitter account, @COPCMP8, will also keep COP18/CMP8 participants and residents of Doha informed about the event.
