DOHA: The nature and opportunities of the field of information systems was highlighted to high school students, at an outreach programme by the Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) recently.  Ibtikar, was the  first outreach programme of the 2014-2015 academic year.
The Ibtikar workshop, which focused on human-centred design and the impact of design and technology on the world, was the first in a series of three workshops designed to highlight the field of information systems to high school students in Qatar.
Over the coming months, Carnegie Mellon Qatar will offer a variety of additional outreach workshops related to its programmes in biological sciences, business administration and computer science. The events will lead up to the university’s March 1 admissions deadline.
Admissions figures show that outreach programmes have a significant impact on prospective student applications, with 44 percent of this year’s incoming students having participated in outreach programmes.
Carnegie Mellon has always taken pride in leading outreach events that positively impact the local community. This tradition continues in Qatar with the steady growth of outreach programs that support the university’s ongoing commitment to the nation’s development.
Carnegie Mellon outreach programs are tailor-made for Qatar and the region and aim to help students prepare for admission into selective universities like the ones in Education City.
The outreach programmes offered at Carnegie Mellon Qatar introduce students to the programs offered and offer insight into life at university through interactive activities and opportunities for prospective students to interact with Carnegie Mellon faculty and current students.
Also  CS4Qatar is a series of workshops designed to inspire Qatar’s youth to join the exciting field of computer science and become creators of innovations that will make a real impact. To address the challenge of attracting women into science and technology Carnegie Mellon launched CS4Qatar for Women a program which aims to broaden young women’s understanding of computer science, it will be held on November 22 and CS4Qatar for Students aimed at all prospective students will take place on February 7, 2015.
