DOHA: Respondents to a poll conducted by the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) have said that academic education should start early in childhood.

More than 3,000 people, mostly educationalists, gave their opinion on five key educational topics in the 2012 WISE polls. Forty-nine percent of the respondents agreed that academic education should start in early childhood, while 47 percent of them rejected the idea in the online poll.

The poll also sought the respondents’ views on investment in education, building educators’ capacity, job markets and access to primary education. The poll was conducted to coincide with the fourth WISE summit held in November in Doha, under the theme Collaborating for Change, with the participation of more than 1,000 prominent educations and corporate, political and social leaders from over 100 countries.

Achieving universal access to primary education is the single most important priority in education, according to 45 percent of the respondents to the poll.

The poll results also revealed that 51 percent of the respondents said the single most effective investment in education was to strengthen continuing professional development.

Among the 3,000 respondents, an average of 76 percent said that building educators’ capacity to innovate was a key priority for innovation in education.

Preparing learners for job markets is a major goal of education, according to 46 percent of the respondents, while 38 percent of them rejected the opinion.
