DOHA: The Social Development Center (SDC), a member of Qatar Foundation, said yesterday that applications for Volunteer Awards for 2014/2015 are open and will close on December 28.
The awards were launched in 1999 and was officially announced in 2004.
Since then, the centre has regularly held the ceremony to honour individuals, groups and institutions in Qatar for volunteer work and humanitarian efforts.
The awards also aim to raise awareness about the role of volunteerism in modern society and encourage involvement in volunteer work; starting from the involvement of school students to major institutions.
The awards are in four categories: Honorary Volunteer Award nominated by members of the executive committee of finest representatives of volunteers in the local community; Individuals Volunteer Award, including citizens and residents who are leading figures in volunteer work; Project Award for Institutions, which acknowledges volunteering projects from different institutions; and Research Category, which is addressed to students on secondary and university level, where applicants are required to submit works on a chosen topic to be eligible for the award.
Manar Rashid Al Dossari, Marketing and Public Relations Manager,  SDC, said, “So far, SDC has honoured a large number of individual and institutional volunteers.
“We look forward to receiving nominations for creative and unique initiatives that have brought about a positive change in our community and have the potential to achieve further success in the future,” Al Dossari added.
