DOHA: A gallery devoted exclusively to the country’s Oil and Gas industry will be established as an integral part of the future National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ).
In this regard, Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) yesterday signed an agreement with the Qatar National Committee for the World Petroleum Council (QNCWPC) to be its official partner for this project.
Under this agreement, QNCWPC will support the museum’s education programmes and materials related to the Oil and Gas industry.
“We are delighted to be announcing our partnership with the QNCWPC. Through its future Gallery Nine dedicated to the story of Oil and Gas in Qatar, the NMoQ aims to educate Qataris and residents about the history of Qatar and the way the Oil discovery shaped the nation since 1940,” said Dr Abdullah Al Sulaiti, NMoQ Deputy Director for Research and Collections.
“The reestablishment of the National Museums of Qatar in its new design will contribute effectively in preserving our national identity,” said QNCWPC Chairman Issa Al Ghanim.
“The museum will allow visitors to learn more about our past, present and future and view our culture that reflects the authenticity of the Qatari people. The discovery of Oil is undoubtedly considered one of the most historic phases of the state of Qatar and which led to major changes in the country,” said Al Ghanim.
Because of the crucial role the oil and gas industry plays in the country, the national museum decided to establish a special oil and gas gallery within the new building, he said.
“The aim of this is to reflect the story of the oil and gas industry development and this will give visitors the opportunity to see all phases of oil and gas production, from exploration and development to processing and storage to transport and export,” he added.
QNCWPC decided to donate QR10m to support the establishment of this gallery as a legacy of the 20th World Petroleum Congress hosted by Qatar in 2011 and in accordance with the policy adopted at the conference which is to establish a project that serves the community, said Al Ghanim.
The new under-construction NMoQ features an innovative design by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel. It is inspired by the desert rose and grows organically around the original Emiri Diwan.
The Museum will celebrate the culture and heritage of Qatar and its people, embodying the pride and traditions of Qataris while offering international visitors a dialogue about rapid change and modernisation. The NMoQ will represent the past, present and future of Qatar through exhibitions, educational activities, cultural site visits, and technology-based programming.
