DOHA: Qatar University’s Social and Economic Survey Research Institute (SESRI) has launched a major research project to provide unbiased opinion polling on questions of interest to Qatar to highlight the social, economic, cultural and employment policies.
Qatar Quarterly Survey (QQS) employs computer-assisted telephone interviewing, a technique that facilitates timely and accurate data collection and customises the flow of the questionnaire based on the answers provided.
Conducted by a team of researchers through the institute’s state-of-the-art call centres, the 15-minute survey seeks feedback from nationals and high and low-income expats to gauge attitudes and views on matters of public importance.
It includes a demographic component and an evaluation of the perceptions of respondents on issues that relate to quality of life, consumer confidence, traffic, health insurance, and other matters of importance to society. About 1,600 respondents were randomly selected and interviewed in the first round.
SESRI Director and Associate Vice-President for Research Dr Darwish Al Emadi said: “Information emerging from the project is critical for mapping changing opinions and perceptions on issues. SESRI continues to be a leading partner in contributing to national efforts to address the needs of the society and seek solutions in the face of Qatar’s rapid development and progress.”
QQS’s lead principal investigator and SESRI’s head of research Dr Abdoulaye Diop said the survey “enables residents to reflect on changing circumstances of their lives in this dynamic environment”.
SESRI has also been engaged in studies that address Qatar’s and regional concerns such as the GCC single currency, life in Qatar, social capital in Qatar, education, gender, and migrant workers.
Its collaborations with the Global Competitiveness Report of the World Economic Forum, World Values Survey and Arab Barometer Project have helped advance research in Qatar and the wider region, providing key statistics to help formulate policy and set national priorities.
