DOHA: An internal committee of the Advisory Council yesterday discussed finer points of a draft traffic law with senior traffic officials, including the Department’s Director, Brigadier Mohamed Saad Al Kharji.
The objective is to prepare an extensive report on the draft law which will be forwarded to the Advisory Council for debate.
The Council will later, as per established procedures, refer the draft back to the State Cabinet with its recommendations.
The draft was sent to the Council by the State Cabinet after its initial approval.
Brigadier Ibrahim Saad Al Sulaiti, Head of Statistical Analysis Office at the Office of the Prime Minister, and Major Ahmed Abdullah Al Harami, Head of Traffic Rule Violations at the Traffic Department, Major Rashid Salem Al Qamra, also attended the meet and fielded question from Committee members, reports QNA.
QNA said that the officials explained to the Committee members interior ministry’ viewpoint about the draft law.
The presence of Al Qamra, according o observers, suggests that the present fines for various traffic rule breaches like jumping the red light (which carries a fine of QR6,000 and is being opposed by many citizens), may have also been discussed by the ‘Internal and external’ Committee of the Advisory Council.
The Committee submitted a report on the draft law to the Advisory Council earlier but the Council sent it back to it saying a more extensive report was needed and for that the Committee should seek clarifications from senior traffic and interior ministry officials.
The ‘internal and external’ Committee of the Advisory Council is known so because it has Council members on it and depending on a subject it must give its opinion on, it ropes in external experts.
The Advisory Council is expected to soon refer the draft law back to the Cabinet after discussions once the Committee has submitted its report to it.
