DOHA: Bahrain said yesterday that it had uncovered a terrorist cell in the country that aimed to set up a military network to perpetrate acts of terror in vital locations.
This was disclosed by Bahrain’s Interior Minister Lt General Sheikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa at the 14th GCC Interior Ministers consultative meeting opened in Manama yesterday.
“The confessions of the suspects and the facts about their movements, calls, money transfers and technology in making explosives have proven their link with Iran and the latter’s attempts to interfere in the homeland security of Bahrain, in addition to ensuring the continuation of violence, vandalism and criminal acts by terrorists against policemen and civilians,” Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported yesterday.
Qatar’s delegation to the meeting is led by the Minister of State for Interior Affairs H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani.
“Since the 13th meeting, held in November 2012 in Riyadh, security-related incidents have been occurring in the region,” said the Bahrani minister. He explained that the security situation requires a collective position and agreement on the identification of common threat and increased coordination and prioritisation when the emergence of any new threats.
“We confront security-related cases and stances that are dealt with according to the law. There is no question of letting go of the protection of a country’s security. Any party that thinks of jeopardising the sovereignty and integrity of our countries should not expect that we will accept that. What we have gone through in terms of security-related incidents has alerted us to the security threats around us. There is no doubt that we need to move towards closer cooperation and unity in words and deeds,” the Bahrani minister said.
“When we discuss security threats in the Gulf, it is also important to focus on the risks of earthquakes and tremors. Thus, there is a need for quick and coordinated work to formulate the recommendations required to maintain the general safety in the GCC states.”
