TEHRAN: Iran test-fired a new missile on Saturday amid rising tensions in the Persian Gulf region.

"Iran will always continue testing different defense and strategic systems,” Commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), Major General Hossein Salami, was quoted as saying by the semi-official Mehr news agency.

He said the tests aim at "enhancing the country’s defense and deterrence power and will not be stopped”.

The IRGC commander, however, did not give any information about the missile test.

Saturday’s test comes amid tensions in the region since the U.S. unilaterally withdrew from a 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and imposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic.
