Doha, Qatar: In cooperation with Türkiye’s Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH), Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has completed the construction and equipment works of a charity bakery in Jinderes, Aleppo Governorate, Syria.
The project has begun production, distributing bread bags for free to the most vulnerable population.
It is part of QRCS’s ongoing efforts to enhance food security and livelihoods in the areas affected by the 2023 Syria earthquake, which damaged infrastructure and rendered almost all bakeries in Jinderes out of service.
The bakery premises consist of a production plant, warehouse, and integrated service facilities. It has a modern production line with all necessary technical and logistical equipment (power supply, fuel, and a water tank), to ensure continuous operation and stable services.
It has a daily production capacity of approximately 4.3 tonnes of flour, producing around 7,150 700-gram bread bags per day.
The purpose of the project is to secure bread as a basic food staple for affected people, as well as to alleviate their economic and living burdens, amidst the difficult circumstances in the region.
The number of beneficiaries is estimated at 4,670 families, or more than 23,000 persons. Bread is distributed for free on a daily basis through designated points at camps and shelters.
Also, QRCS provides a total of 824 tons of flour as operational support for the bakery for the coming six months. After that, IHH will undertake the management and operation of the bakery, to ensure the sustainability of free or subsidised production, enabling the project to reach out to as many beneficiaries as possible in the long term.
QRCS remains committed to maintaining humanitarian support and sustainable community development efforts in Syria, working closely with local and international partners to meet the needs of affected families and improve their living conditions.
