LONDON - Veteran former England international Emile Heskey is to make a surprise return to English football after agreeing a deal with Championship side Bolton.

Heskey, now 36, has been without a club after leaving Australian A-League side Newcastle Jets and has been training with Bolton, now managed by his one-time Leicester team-mate Neil Lennon.

He has done enough to earn a short-term deal, following another veteran striker, Eidur Gudjohnsen, who signed a similar contract earlier this month.

Bolton must wait for international clearance to see if will be available for their Boxing Day clash with Blackburn.

Heskey played 62 times for England and also featured for Liverpool, Birmingham, Wigan and Aston Villa.
