Doha: The presence of Sri Lankans in Doha and their contribution to the society is prominent. Among them Shanaz Shabdeen (pictured) who is living here for more than a decade has played a prominent role in two projects which aimed at creating a Guinness World Record (GWR) from Qatar.
The multi-talented Shanaz , is a designer by profession and at present works as an art director for a media and publication company. With his passion for creativity, Shanaz also has a great interest in photography.
“It was unexpected that I got involved in creating Guinness World Records. The first project was about the largest T-shirt. The project was handled by the company where I worked earlier. The concept and design was developed by myself. Then I worked on the largest classified magazine, again with the concept and design. It makes me proud to have been part of both projects,” said Shanaz.
He has been recognized by the GWR for his contribution in creating the largest classified magazine in 2013. Shanaz’s contribution to Qatar and Sri Lankan expatriate community is not limited to a professional level. He has involved himself in several social, community and volunteer activities during his 13 years of stay in Qatar.
“Qatar has given me plenty of opportunities to develop myself as a professional and contribute to the society. I started my volunteer work during the Asian Games held in 2006 and have worked as a volunteer in the Doha Tribeca Film Festival as well,” said Shanaz.
“I feel privileged and I see myself still as beginner in serving Qatar. I am looking forward to participate and involve in more events and social activities and helping the community which I’m a part already,” he added.
Shanaz is also an active member of the Sri Lankan community. He continues to play a prominent role in the Sri Lanka Coordinating Committee Qatar (SLCC) and Being Kind Foundation (BKF), both affiliated with Sri Lankan embassy in Qatar. SLCC mostly organizes cultural and social events, while BKF is an education foundation helping less privileged students in Sri Lanka.
He was recognized by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Qatar with an Excellence Award in 2015 for his contribution to the community.
