SEOUL: Samsung Electronics Co., the world's top smartphone maker, said Friday its fourth-quarter operating profit nearly doubled from a year earlier on robust shipments of its flagship Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 smartphones.

Net profit came to 7.04 trillion won (US $6.59 billion) in the October-December period, growing 75.6% from a year earlier, the company said in a regulatory filing, Yonhap reported.

Revenue rose 18.5% on-year to 56.06 trillion won, and operating profit soared 89.4% to a record 8.84 trillion won over the cited period. The figures were in line with Samsung's guidance released earlier this month.

For all of 2012, Samsung saw its net profit jump 73.3% to 23.85 trillion won. Annual revenue and operating income reached 201.1 trillion won and 29.05 trillion won, respectively.

The stronger bottom line was largely powered by the IT & Mobile Communications unit, which generates more than 60% of Samsung's overall operating profit.

The division's operating profit reached 5.44 trillion won in the fourth quarter, more than doubling from 2.56 trillion won the previous year.

Samsung, which released the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2 devices last year, said it has sold more than 30 million and 5 million units of the flagship models as of November. (QNA)
