LONDON: Britain’s planned 2017 referendum on whether to stay in the European Union was close to collapse yesterday.
A vote in the House of Lords, the upper chamber of parliament, means that a bill proposing the referendum looks likely to run out of time to become law.
The original wording of the question in the bill was: “Do you think that the United Kingdom should remain a member of the European Union?” Members of the Lords voted to amend it after determining that question was misleading.AGENCIES
