KOLKATA--Days after the recovery of five bodies at two flats — one on the city outskirts in Garfa and the other on the southern fringes in 24 Parganas – sent shockwaves through Kolkata, investigators have revealed the man who killed his two wives and children before slitting his genitals and wrist was under influence of a “psychotropic drug”, and that he might have been suffering from “castration anxiety”.

On Thursday morning, when the police reached the Purbachal flat at Garfa, they had found the semi-nude body of Rohini Chakraborty (34) in a pool of blood, her three-year-old Iyasha throttled and a naked Sankar Karmakar (40) lying dead in another room. He had chopped off his genitals before slitting his wrist. At around the same time, policemen in 24 Parganas discovered two bodies at a flat in the Harinavi apartment. The bodies were of Poulami Karmakar (35) and her son Aritra (11) — both had cut marks on abdomen and throat.

In a bid to solve this “unique case”, the police found several facets of Sankar’s life — a realtor under Rs 35 lakh debt, a husband who had a second woman in his life, a drug addict, and a patient having psychotropic medication issues. The investigators said the first two murders — of Poulami and Aritra — were pre-planned, while the others that he committed were under effect of a psychotropic drug.

“The frenzied state was effect of a drug that made his nervous system inactive for some time. We are also opting for chemical analysis of the substance that we got in his lungs. The doctors say that he could not have castrated himself and then walked from one room to another, had his nervous system been working at that time.

This is the most gruesome murder and suicide we have ever investigated,” said a senior police official. The doctors, it is understood, have told the investigators that Sankar might have been suffering from “castration anxiety”. Sankar also was addicted to several banned drugs, police said.

According to police, while the double murder at the Harinavi apartment took place at around 10.30 pm on Wednesday, the murders at the Garfa flat were committed early on Thursday. The police said that Sankar bought the Harinavi flat eight years ago, beside renting the Garfa flat three years ago. The investigators suspected that the “relationship” between Sankar and Rohini led the series of murders, but the exact reason is yet to be ascertained.

During questioning, the family members of Rohini told police that she was in dark about his first wife, and she came to know about his family only after she had given birth to their daughter Iyasha.
