DOHA: Dr Tariq Abbas, Paediatric Surgical Specialist at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), has been nominated for Arab Health Awards 2015 to become the Young Surgeon of the Year.
Three entries from HMC have been shortlisted for the awards, HMC said yesterday.
Dr Abbas has published articles in a large number of medical journals and participated in many ongoing research projects on child health.
He has also worked in the war-torn Darfur region of Sudan on an internationally-funded health project.
The awards recognise outstanding achievements by individuals and organisations that have contributed to the growth and development of the healthcare industry in the Middle East. The shortlisted HMC submissions are in the Excellence in Patient Centred Care; Young Surgeon of the Year; and Excellence in Radiology categories.
HMC’s Enaya Specialised Care Centre in Medical City has been shortlisted in the Excellence in Patient Centred Care category.
This builds on Enaya’s success in the 2014 Hospital Build Awards for the Best Hospital Design in the Middle East and the Best Healing Environment, said an HMC statement. Enaya offers patients multi-disciplinary care within state-of-the-art facilities and amenities, providing a calmer environment for more therapeutic healing.
HMC’s MRI-guided brachytherapy has been nominated in the Excellence in Radiology category.
The project has led to significantly improved probability of cure compared to conventional brachytherapy by enabling individualised application technique and treatment planning for cervical cancer, one of the most common female malignancies and the world’s second cause of female cancer mortality.
