Doha: The music duo Circle of Sound is arriving for the first time on March 30. They will perform at Al Rayyan Theatre, Souq Waqif, as part of the British Festival 2014.
Circle of Sound is a collaboration between composer Soumik Datta on the 19-string sarod, and drummer Bernhard Schimpelsberger.
Hailed as the ‘vanguard of British Asian music’ (BBC), their sound resonates with deep Indian ragas, urban beats, glockenspiels and a spirited rock attitude.
They have now expanded to include orchestral strings, live electronics and award-winning special guests, including singer-songwriter Fiona Bevan, Laura Stanford, Rosabella Gregory and Danial Keane.
With a growing musical vision, Circle of Sound will launch its second album Anti Hero in Qatar. It features collaborations with iconic musicians Nitin Sawhney and Anoushka Shankar. The performance in Doha will be the first stop on the Anti Hero international tour.
Martin Hope, Director of British Council Qatar, said: “We are excited to be welcoming Circle of Sound. As music brings people of all backgrounds and walks of life together in a way no other activity does, this performance speaks its own language to all residents in Qatar.
“After the Circle of Sound’s premiere at Alchemy 2011, they have toured the world, representing the best of new British music, winning over audiences. We are honoured to welcome them to Doha on their first visit to Qatar.”
Datta said: “We are thrilled to be performing in Doha. This is such an exciting opportunity for us to support the festival.
“Having collaborated with British Council over the past few years, we have had the privilege of working with some incredible local talent. We have been amazed by the dedication and skills local musicians hold. It’s truly inspiring.”
The Circle of Sound performance is as part of the festival, a collaboration between the council, the British embassy and UKTI.
