DOHA: Two young customs officials, including a woman, stationed at Hamad International Airport (HIA), have been given awards for huge drug hauls they made the same day.
The consignments caught by the two officials included 5kg of marijuana, 107 grammes of heroin and 3,213 pills of the banned tablet, Tramadol.
“The seizure of narcotic pills was an effort of our woman inspector,” the customs department of HIA said in a release yesterday. The woman inspector caught a passenger coming from an Arab country for possessing large quantities of prohibited materials—some 3,213 pills of Tramadol, said the department.
On the other hand, the same day, a male customs official caught 5kg of marijuana and 107grammes of heroin powder. A passenger from an Asian country was carrying the drugs.
A packet inside the bag of the passenger was wrapped in unusual way and looked suspicious, said Ajab Manzur Al Qahtani, Acting Customs Director at HIA.
The packet was in a food container. The passenger was scanned and a packet containing 107 grammes of heroin was recovered from a secret pocket.
The customs officer who seized the marijuana said: “I noticed that the contents of the bag looked different from the usual ones and got some indication from the X-ray machine. I alerted my colleagues that  there are suspicious things in the bag. When it was opened, the nefarious materials were found,” he added.
Ahmad bin Ali Al Mohannadi, Head, General Customs Authority, presented awards to both officials.
