DOHA: Soon all villas, including those part of huge or small complexes, residential apartments, office units in buildings and shops will be assigned numbers to pinpoint their location.
Once the numbering is done, door-to-door postal services could be a possibility. The move is part of the second phase of a home numbering project the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning calls ‘Unwani’ (My Address).
In the first phase, some 125,000 buildings were numbered. Now, internal portions of buildings and residential and business complexes like apartments, offices, shops will be numbered.
The project is a brainchild of the Geographical Information System (GIS) Department of the ministry. Its Head, Amer Al Humaidi, said in the present phase some 300,000 units will be numbered over the next two years. Once this is done, all homes, offices and shops and other units could be located with help from GPS on a smartphone.
This will help ambulances to locate a caller’s place, and exact addresses will be available for use by people and departments.
He said the real estate registry (real estate registration department) at the Ministry of Justice will also benefit.
The project has been launched with state agencies, including Kahramaa, Civil Defence, statistics officials, postal department and Lekhwiya.
Al Humaidi said surveyors involved in the project are keying in data using iPads. The GIS department has developed a special application for it. Data will be fed to a central server at the GIS department. The numbering will be useful for FIFA 2022 World Cup projects and industrial and commercial activities, he said without elaborating.
