Five children killed by landmine

Kabul: About four children of one family were killed and another injured in a landmine in the remote Maroof District of Kandahar Province, Kandahar Governor House said in a statement relayed by Khaama press yesterday.

The landmine exploded after the children found it and started playing with it.

The dead were four boys, all under the age of 10, from one family. A girl who was related to the boys was injured.

All four dead were buried near the site of the incident, and the girl was taken to Mirwais Hospital in Kandahar.

Bomb wounds 17 in Quetta: Police

QUETTA: Bomb attacks wounded 17 people in Pakistan yesterday and targeted an election candidate in the run-up to historic general elections in the nuclear-armed country, police said.

The first attack wounded 13 people near a Shia mosque and a private hospital in Pakistan’s southwestern city of Quetta, police said.

The bicycle bomb exploded in the Satellite Town area of Quetta, the capital of the oil and gas-rich province of Baluchistan, which borders Afghanistan and Iran.

Police official Fayaz Sumbal said the target was not clear as the injured were mainly bystanders.

Pakistanis cut off burglar’s arms

LAHORE: A purported Pakistani burglar who crept into a village home to steal was caught red-handed and had both arms severed at the elbow by his would-be victims, police said yesterday.

The incident happened overnight after Muhammad Tufail, 34, entered a house in Chak Nangar village near the town of Dera Ghazi Khan, 405km southwest of Islamabad, local police official Muhammad Ayub said.

Pervez Ashraf’s security enhanced 

RAWALPINDI: The security at former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf’s private residence (Sanghar House) in Mori Rajhan Village, Gujar Khan has been beefed up once again after he protested over the withdrawal of extra police last week.

The former premier complained with the Rawalpindi police over the withdrawal of extra guards, declaring that he was not being allowed police personnel equal to those provided to former prime minister Mian Nawaz Sharif.
