Al Rayyan thrash Al Markhiya as Emir Cup kicks off in style

Tabata, Ismail shine in 5-0 victory; Mesaimeer edge out Muaither 2-1

 

DOHA: Football giants Al Rayyan yesterday celebrated their ascent to Qatar Stars League (QSL) by crushing Markhiya 5-0 in their opening Emir Cup clash.
Al Rayyan were demoted to the Second Division at the end of the 2013-14 season but won a promotion when they topped the Qatargas League last week.
Yesterday’s 5-0 win was easily managed when Brazilian striker Rodrigo Tabata fired two goals while Ahmed Ismail also chipped in with a brace.
Ukrainian Marko Devic scored the fifth goal at Grand Hamad Stadium.
The Emir Cup will be played in four phases.
The next phase will start on April 28 when four matches will be played at Al Arabi Stadium and Qatar SC’s home turf.
Meanwhile, in other match of the opening day, Mesaimeer edged out Muaither 2-1 following a thrilling battle.  
As many as 18 first and second division teams are taking part in the tournament. Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium at Lekhwiya Club; Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium at Al Sadd Sports Club and Thani Bin Jassim Stadium will also play host to event’s matches.
