138 MPs paid no income tax

ISLAMABAD: A total of 138 out of 324 members of the new National Assembly (the lower house) of Pakistan, including four ministers, either paid no income tax in 2012 or authorities have no data regarding their dues. Taxes of 40 members were was deducted at source from their salaries as MPs during the previous term and they include five ministers. Seventy-eight members pay less that Rs100,000 per year but the remaining 68 paid more than Rs100,000. MPs paid Rs54,089,198 in 2012, but bulk of it was paid by about a dozen members.

50pc rise in research

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has witnessed an impressive 50 percent increase in research publications in the past two years, up from 3,939 to 6,200 in the higher education sector. This has been the second highest increase worldwide. Scimago, the world’s leading research database, says if this trend continues, by 2018 Pakistan would move ahead 26 notches in world ranking, from 43 to 27, and for the first time will surpass Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand in Asia. Pakistan publishes more research papers per head than India.

Top cop shot dead in Pakistan  

PESHAWAR: A deputy superintend of police and his driver were gunned down in Peshawar in the early hours yesterday. Police said gunmen on motorbikes ambushed the vehicle of Aman Ullah in Faqirabad when he left his home. The attackers fled.
