Doha, Qatar: Minister of Environment and Climate Change H E Sheikh Dr. Faleh bin Nasser bin Ahmed bin Ali Al Thani has participated in an event to release baby turtles into the sea.

This came within the framework of the efforts of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to achieve the goals related to the environmental pillar of Qatar Vision 2030 and the national development strategy for preserving biodiversity.

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change paid a visit to Fuwairit Beach on Friday, June 23, 2023, accompanied by officials from the protection sector and natural reserves.

The visit aimed at reviewing the progress of work related to the hawksbill sea turtle conservation project during the nesting period that starts in June and ends at the end of July of each year, MoECC tweeted.

Fuwairit Beach is considered one of the most important nesting areas for sea turtles in Qatar, as it is characterized by a unique sandy soil that attracts mother turtles to nest.

The Minister also participated in the release of a group of baby turtles with the employees and visitors of Fuwairit Kite Beach Resort, adjacent to the site of the Turtle Conservation Project, within the framework of integrating efforts and raising awareness to protect endangered species in their original habitats.

The endangered sea turtle hawksbill conservation is one of the most successful environmental projects in the country to preserve biodiversity. Under this project, 31,586 baby turtles were released during 2016-2021 in the protected area.

The project played a major role in protecting sea turtles and raising awareness about protecting them and preserving the environment in the community

The project is being implemented at Fuwairit Beach from April 1 until August 1 following ministerial decision No. 37 of 2010 to protect the endangered species of sea turtles and birds.

Nesting of endangered hawksbill sea turtles is monitored on beaches and islands, necessary measurements are taken, and the nests are moved, and at the end of the season, large numbers of young turtles are released and returned to the sea.

During the previous seasons, genetic samples were taken from turtles, as well as tracking devices were placed, and many infected turtles were treated and returned to the sea.
