DOHA: As part of an anti-begging campaign during Ramadan, law-enforcement officials have rounded up 26 men and women found seeking alms.

The arrests were made near mosques and in residential areas, the Ministry of Interior said in a statement yesterday.

Begging is outlawed in Qatar, yet a large number of people, mostly visitors, arrive here during the holy month to take advantage of people’s charitable gesture.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the ministry has an anti-begging unit that has launched the campaign.

The unit has called on people to report suspects on 2347453, 2347444, 66414040.
