Guatemala City: Four Guatemalans were murdered by shots to their heads in a house near the border with Mexico for an unknown reason, Guatemalan police said Sunday.

The killings of the two men and two women aged between 25 and 55 occurred Saturday overnight in Malacatan, a town in southwestern Guatemala five kilometers (three miles) from the border.

Towns along the Mexican border have been affected by increasing crime in recent years, especially related to drug trafficking.

Guatemala forms part of the notorious "Northern Triangle" of Central American countries that are prey to extremely high levels of violence, much of it attributed to vicious gangs.
