Jeddah: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has welcomed the announcement by French President Emmanuel Macron of his country’s intention to officially recognize the State of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session in September.

OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha expressed his endorsement of the move, calling it an important step aligned with international law and consistent with France’s long-standing support for the rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He emphasized that the announcement enhances Palestine’s political and legal standing on the global stage, and urged all countries that have not yet recognized Palestine to do so promptly and to support its full membership in the United Nations.

The Secretary-General also underscored the importance of active participation in the upcoming high-level international conference on the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian issue, scheduled to resume next week at the UN headquarters under the joint leadership of Saudi Arabia and France.

He stressed the need to adopt practical measures that contribute to peace and stability in the region, in accordance with the two-state solution, relevant international resolutions, and the Arab Peace Initiative.
