GENEVA: A collision between two light aircraft in Switzerland yesterday has left six people with serious injuries, according to police.
One of the planes crashed in a field in the canton of St Gallen. Local police cited by Swiss news agency ATS said the four people on board were seriously injured in the accident.
The other aircraft made an emergency landing in nearby Sitterdorf. Both passengers also suffered serious injury.
Police gave no indication as to the circumstances of the accident, which occurred early in the afternoon.
TOULOUSE, France: Three people were killed when a racing car veered off course during practice for a road race and ploughed into bystanders in southwest France yesterday.
Two race marshalls and a photographer died in the accident, said police in the department of Gers. The incident happened at around 1100 local time (0900 GMT) during course testing close to Laas-Tillac, 110km west of Toulouse.
The two race officials, a man and a woman, were in their sixties while the photographer was in his forties, police said.
According to preliminary investigations, the driver, who was unhurt in the crash, lost control of the car while volunteers were erecting security barriers.
The race, a 1.5 kilometre hill climb, was cancelled by organisers.
MADRID: A Spanish police helicopter flying to rescue a mountain climber with a broken ankle crashed yesterday, killing all three crew members on board, emergency services said.
The helicopter’s blades struck the side of a mountain close to the Picos de Europa range in the northwestern province of Leon. The aircraft then slid down the rock face, regional emergency services said in a statement.
Two Guardia Civil pilots and a member of a mountain rescue team died in the accident, it said.
A fourth member of the rescue team who had already exited the helicopter to search for the injured climber sounded the alarm, a spokesman said.
