DOHA: Abdul Rahman Ali Al Aqaily, chairman of the General Postal Corporation of Qatar, was officially designated as Congress chairman during the opening plenary of the 25th Universal Postal Congress yesterday at the Qatar National Convention Centre.

“My appointment is not so much a personal honour but more of recognition of the key role my country is playing to serve humanity, under the able guidance of its leaders. This role is clearly manifested in Qatar’s hosting of major events, and especially international meetings under the auspices of the United Nations,” said Al Aqaily.

As host of the Congress, Qatar will also automatically assume the chairmanship of the UPU’s Council of Administration for 2013-2016.

In the next four years, Qatar will play a big role in the Universal Postal Union through the Doha Postal Strategy (DPS), the UPU’s strategic document for the future which underlines the postal network’s three dimensions – physical, electronic and financial – as well as interconnection, governance and development as key axes to strengthen postal services worldwide.
