DOHA: The Public Works Authority — Ashghal — said yesterday that 75 percent of work on the Doha Corniche project have been completed.
Ashghal said it was keen to finish the project “in the shortest possible time”.
The company had earlier said work will be completed in November.
The project includes converting all major roundabouts on Corniche street and the surrounding areas into intersections controlled by the Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS).
The systems react to the volume of traffic, creating a so-called ‘green-wave’ to enable smoother traffic and less congestion.
All traffic lights at the new intersections will be installed in two weeks but will become operational only on completion of the project, Ashghal said in a statement.
Roundabouts being converted into intersections are the Museum of Islamic Art, Diwan, the National Theatre, Wadi Al Sail, Qatar Post, Onaizah, Lejbailat and Oryx, in addition to the Grand Hamad Street junction. Work on the Mina Roundabout was completed earlier.
The project also includes upgrading of utility services and establishment of infrastructure for the traffic control system along the Corniche.
This represents between 35 and 40 percent of work and cost.
Nearly 70,000 cubic meters of excavations have been carried out so far, using about 200 heavy machinery and about 1,500 workers on all project sites.
Work on the project, costing between QR150m and QR200m started in July.
It is being carried out round- the-clock “to complete the project in a record time,” said the statement.
“Ashghal is very keen to finish this vital project in the shortest possible time and that is why it assigned three companies to work on the project 24/7 and meet high-quality standards,” the company added.
