Doha: Qatar University (QU) yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) to create a system of cross-appointments. It was signed by QU President Prof Sheikha Abdulla Al Misnad and HMC Managing Director Dr Hanan Al Kuwari.

Corporate academic clinicians will work towards continued improvement in the delivery of quality patient care and furthering the academic and research objectives of both organisations.

The MoU will contribute to the development of a skilled national healthcare workforce and the delivery of safe, high-quality care, in line with Qatar’s National Health Strategy.

As part of the agreement, cross-appointed QU faculty will work with HMC clinicians, contributing to patient care — these positions will be in complement to their teaching and research responsibilities at the university.

Reciprocally, cross-appointed clinicians from HMC will engage in teaching and academic activities at the university.

QU’s College of Pharmacy is the first of QU colleges to be involved in the new agreement.

Through their appointments as academic pharmacy clinicians, QU faculty members Dr Bridget Javed, Dr Emily Black and Dr Kyle Wilby will bring their expert academic and research capabilities into the clinical setting.

The arrangement will also improve pharmacy teaching, enhance clinical pharmacy practice, and promote engagement in shared research to improve the health and well-being of Qatar’s population.

Additional QU colleges are expected to join the agreement in the coming months.

Commenting on the agreement, Prof Al Misnad said: “QU is pleased to partner with HMC in another important initiative that brings together expertise in research, teaching and clinical practice that will benefit a wide range of stakeholders — the college, HMC, faculty, clinicians, students, patients, and the wider community.”

Dr Al Kuwari said: “This agreement emphasises HMC and QU’s joint commitment to advance the education of health professionals in Qatar, foster a culture of research, and provide opportunities for continued professional development for our skilled clinical leaders and academic faculty members.  The Peninsula
