Sheikha Moza establishes umbrella body for NGOs

DOHA: H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser yesterday issued a decision establishing the Qatar Foundation for Social Action, a supervisory body for civil society organisations in the country.

This is the first time all the different non-governmental organisations working in different sectors have been brought under an umbrella body.

The new foundation will function under a joint board of directors, as a supervisory and monitoring body over the following institutions and centres: Qatar Foundation for the Care of Orphans , Qatar Foundation for the Care of the Elderly, Al Owain Social Rehabilitation Center, Qatar Foundation for protection of Women and Children, Qatar Foundation for Combating human trafficking, Shafallah Center for Children with Special Needs , Family Consulting Center and the Social Development Center.

“This decision will have a great impact on strengthening the civil society organisations in Qatar and promoting their role in social action,” Qatar News Agency said yesterday.

Several Qatari experts and representatives of civil society groups have hailed the new decision saying it will enable these organizations to work more effectively and in a coordinated manner.

“This decision has come at the right time. This will help reduce expenses through a unified human resources department and joint financing,” Mubarak Al Khulaifi, director of the Qatar Foundation for Care of the Elderly told
