Doha: The fourth conference of the presidents of the Supreme Arab Courts began here yesterday under the chairmanship of  Judge H E Masood bin Mohamed Al Ameri, the President of the Supreme Judicial Council.

The three-day conference will discuss three major topics.

The first is the judiciary’s contribution to enhance social security in family affairs, focussing on legal principles stemming from Shariah, revitalisation of the role of social workers and psychologists in family courts and settlement of family disputes in addition to expanding the use of penalties and social recruitment procedures as an alternative to penalties and traditional measures.

The second topic will focus on the role of the jury in implementing international conventions in investment disputes and supervising the national judiciary on rules of international arbitration in such disputes.

The third subject deals with specialised courts as a means to promote justice.

The heads of the courts will also discuss on the sidelines a draft system of the federation of the supreme Arab courts (for judiciary and scientific cooperation)  recommended by the third conference and referred to the Arab Centre for Judicial and Legal Research for study.

In his address at the opening ceremony, Al Ameri highlighted the importance of the conference for supporting ties and coordination between the supreme courts in Arab states to enhance the role of the supreme courts to realise justice and perform the tasks assigned to them.

Al Ameri said close coordination and cooperation between Arab judicial authorities in the recent years at the bilateral level and at the multilateral parties level gave room for advanced mechanisms to benefit from experiences through the exchange of expertise, laws and judicial principles of the supreme courts.

These periodical conferences held under the Arab League play a fundamental and an effective role in exchanging expertise in specialised fields.

Al Ameri also stressed the importance of continuing efforts to develop mechanisms of bilateral and collective cooperation and coordination to realise the objectives to cope with global developments.

He said the Arab world has all capabilities that enable it to develop mechanisms for cooperation and coordination between judicial authorities and share experiences.
